Inclusion Statement for FLX Adventure Camp at Paddle-N-More
“Camps often carry the connotation of being utopian communities, bubbles where the world’s “isms” cannot penetrate. To this, we say, Yes, and…. Yes, we can all acknowledge that camps give us a world of good. We also must recognize the ways [reality] in which the real world shows up each summer” (American Camp Association).
At FLX Adventure Camp at Paddle-N-More, we embrace the ideal that our camp is a microcosm of a better world – a place where the complexities and “isms” of society meet the hopeful vision of unity and understanding. The American Camp Association reminds us that while camps offer immense good, they also reflect the realities of our broader world. With this understanding, we are committed to fostering an inclusive camp community that actively challenges stereotypes, biases, and bullying. Our commitment extends to embracing diversity in all forms, including but not limited to age, gender, ability, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual identity, and socio-economic status. Our mission is to create a welcoming space where every camper feels valued and part of our camp family.
Our Approach to Diversity and Inclusion:
- Celebrating Individuality: We see each camper as a unique individual, celebrating diverse interests and talents.
- Encouraging Open Communication: We foster a culture of learning and growth, promoting respectful and appropriate language.
- Building a Sense of Belonging: Our camp is a place where diverse identities and backgrounds are respected, and every voice is valued.
- Recognizing Contributions: We strive to acknowledge and celebrate each camper’s contributions and achievements.
- Reviewing Policies: Continuously evaluating our policies ensures a discrimination-free environment where all can play and participate freely.
- Upholding Standards: We adhere to our Code of Conduct, setting an example of best practices within our camp community.
- Resolving Conflicts Respectfully: We encourage handling disagreements with respect and openness, understanding the importance of difficult conversations.
- Professionalism in Dialogue: Every interaction is approached with professionalism and respect for all viewpoints.
What We Ask of You:
Your role in reinforcing these values is invaluable. As parents and guardians, your support and involvement are crucial in extending these principles beyond our camp’s boundaries:
- Foster Safe Interactions: Engage your child in discussions on how to be considerate and respectful in diverse settings. Remind them that words have impact, and to think before speaking.
- Stay Engaged: Communicate with us about any concerns that affect your child’s or others’ physical or mental safety at our camp.
- Understand Our Goals: Recognize our commitment to an environment where fun, growth, and physical and mental well-being are paramount for all campers.
- Join Our Effort: View us as your partners in promoting a welcoming atmosphere for our diverse community.
- Respectful Communication: Approach conversations with our camp community with professionalism and a respectful attitude.
