At FLX Adventure Camp, our counselors don’t just lead watersports activities—they inspire, mentor, and create experiences that leave a lasting impact. Year after year, campers watch their counselors’ enthusiasm and expertise and think, “I want to do that someday!” In fact, many of our current counselors were once campers, motivated by the unforgettable experiences they had at camp over the years.
So, what makes our counselors stand out? It’s a combination of rigorous training, industry-leading research, and a shared passion for helping campers explore, grow, and thrive. Here’s how we prepare our staff to be exceptional role models and leaders.
Why Our Training Stands Out
Becoming an FLX Adventure Camp counselor isn’t just about being skilled at watersports—it’s about helping campers grow, fostering teamwork, and creating an engaging environment. Our six-day training program ensures that counselors are well-prepared to deliver an experience that’s both memorable and meaningful.
What Goes Into Our Counselor Training Program
1. Industry Standards and Certifications
Our counselors are trained using the American Canoe Association (ACA) Water Safety Curriculum, a nationally recognized standard for paddlesports education. This training includes:
- Assessing water conditions to determine appropriate activities.
- Teaching paddling techniques for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.
- Responding to challenges on the water using ACA-approved methods.
2. CPR and First Aid Training
All counselors receive CPR and First Aid certifications to prepare for unexpected situations. While watersports require physical activity, this training ensures counselors are ready to address any situations confidently and effectively.
3. Leadership and Group Management Skills
Great camps run on great leadership. Our counselors learn:
- How to break down complex skills into fun, age-appropriate steps.
- Techniques for managing groups, keeping activities engaging, and encouraging teamwork.
- Strategies to foster positive relationships and communication among campers.
4. Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Child Development
With years of experience in outdoor recreation programming, our leadership team provides counselors with:
- Adventure-Based Programming Training: Counselors design activities that build confidence and encourage exploration.
- Child Development Theory Training: This ensures that every activity is tailored to match the developmental needs of different age groups, helping campers feel successful and motivated.
What This Means for Your Camper
Our counselors’ dedication to training and personal development translates into a camp experience like no other. With their support and leadership, campers:
- Learn new watersports skills with confidence.
- Explore challenges in an engaging and motivating environment.
- Build teamwork and friendships that last a lifetime.
